RNG Continues to Deliver Outsized Climate Benefits in California Transportation

Once again, RNG demonstrates its ability to deliver meaningful emissions reductions across California’s transportation sector. The 2025 California RNG Volumes Report, Slashing California Emissions with Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Transportation, highlights the growing role renewable natural gas (RNG) is playing in reducing transportation emissions across the state. The report, released in June 2026 by The Transport Project (TTP), RNG Coalition, and California Renewable Transportation Alliance (CRTA), showcases the significant climate and air quality benefits RNG continues to provide for California’s transportation sector.

The report shows that RNG use in California transportation applications prevented the release of 7.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (CO2e) in 2025, the equivalent of removing 1.8 million gasoline-powered vehicles from the road for one year. By capturing methane from agricultural, landfill, wastewater, and food waste sources and converting it into transportation fuel, RNG delivers immediate and measurable climate benefits.

The results underscore RNG’s outsized contribution to California’s clean transportation goals. Although RNG represented just 6% of all alternative transportation fuel volume used on California roadways in 2025, it generated more than 25% of all CO2e reductions from alternative on-road fuels and over 32% of total transportation fuel emissions reductions statewide.

California fleets have now achieved six consecutive years of carbon-negative transportation outcomes using RNG, supported by a fuel mix in which renewable natural gas accounts for 98% of all natural gas vehicle fuel used in the state.

“RNG continues to prove that significant emissions reductions can be achieved today with commercially available technology,” said Nicole Rice, President of the California Renewable Transportation Alliance. “These results demonstrate that RNG is delivering immediate environmental benefits at scale, helping fleets reduce their carbon footprint while supporting California’s broader clean transportation and climate goals.”

With established infrastructure, proven heavy-duty applications, and industry-leading carbon intensity performance, RNG remains one of the most effective and scalable tools available to decarbonize transportation today.
