CRTA Leads Coalition Comments on EPA Heavy-Duty Engine Standards Proposal

8.29.26 | CRTA recently led a coalition of industry stakeholders in submitting comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding its Proposed 2027 and Later Model Year Heavy-Duty Engine Standards. While supporting EPA’s goals of improving air quality and providing regulatory certainty, the coalition urged the agency to make a targeted modification to its in-use testing requirements for heavy-duty natural gas engines.

Specifically, the coalition requested that EPA allow optional retesting when a vehicle’s test cycle includes an unusually high number of engine-braking events that are not representative of normal operating conditions. The coalition believes this change would help ensure compliance determinations are based on real-world engine performance and representative duty cycles.

CRTA and coalition partners also highlighted the important role that natural gas-powered heavy-duty vehicles play in reducing emissions, supporting domestic manufacturing, strengthening energy independence, and expanding transportation fuel diversity.
