CARB Data Confirms California’s Natural Gas Vehicles are Carbon-Negative

As of the 3rd quarter 2021, the average carbon intensity (CI) of all the natural gas reported in California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) program was negative 28.17 gCO2e/MJ. That means that California could achieve carbon neutrality TODAY with renewable natural gas-powered trucks.

If the trend continues, we expected the CI value for California’s natural gas fuel supply to become even MORE NEGATIVE when the 4th quarter 2021 LCFS data is published next month. Then, natural gas will have had a negative CI for ALL OF 2021 – a first time for any transportation fuel over a full calendar year!
