The California State Senate unanimously confirmed California Air Resources Board (CARB) Chair Lauren Sanchez on August 31, 2026. With that action, the Senate completed its consideration of Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent CARB appointees: Lauren Sanchez, David Silva, and Paula Stigler Granados, Ph.D.
Under California’s appointments process, gubernatorial appointees to CARB must first have their nominations considered by the Senate Rules Committee before receiving a confirmation vote by the full Senate. A majority vote of the Senate is required to confirm an appointee and allow them to continue serving for the remainder of their appointed term.
Chair Sanchez was appointed by Governor Newsom in September 2025 to serve the remainder of former Chair Liane Randolph’s term, which expires December 31, 2026. Floor debate on her confirmation reflected broad bipartisan support. Senators from both parties highlighted her experience, professionalism, and collaborative approach. Senator Catherine Blakespear, Chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, described Sanchez as “thoughtful, deliberative, and knowledgeable,” while Republican Senators Shannon Grove and Suzette Valladares praised her accessibility, responsiveness, and willingness to engage with legislators and stakeholders.
Board Members David Silva and Paula Stigler Granados, Ph.D. were also confirmed by the full Senate in August. Silva was confirmed on August 17, 2026, after being appointed by Governor Newsom in March 2026 to fill the local air district seat vacated by Dawn Ortiz-Legg. His term expires December 31, 2028. Stigler Granados was confirmed by the full Senate on August 26, 2026. She was appointed to CARB by Governor Newsom in February 2026 to succeed San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. Her term expires December 31, 2030.
These three confirmations provide continuity and stability for the Board as it continues overseeing California’s air quality, climate, and greenhouse gas reduction programs. View the full CARB Board here.
