ARCHES Receives Initial Funding for CA Hydrogen Hub

California is the first of the seven state awardees to receive its initial funding to begin the planning and development of its Hydrogen Hub. The state was chosen last year through ARCHES – a statewide public-private partnership – to receive up to $1.2 billion in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to build out a clean, renewable hydrogen marketplace.

After months of negotiations, ARCHES and the DOE have officially entered into a $12.6 billion agreement that includes an initial federal investment of $30 million to start on selected hydrogen projects across the state over the next 18 months.  According to the award fact sheet, selected projects will include 60 hydrogen fueling stations to service heavy-duty trucks and buses, replacement of existing cargo-handling equipment at the state’s 3 largest ports, power generation at two major power plants, and approximately 165 miles of pipelines.

Clean hydrogen production is also among the planned projects. A majority of it will be produced with renewable electricity, but some will be produced from biogenic sources. Additional details related to the overall planned expansion of the statewide Hydrogen Hub will continue to roll out.
